Schauffele carded a final-round 67 to win the rescheduled Olympic competition last summer in Tokyo. The 2020 Games were pushed back one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite not winning the title, Schauffele has been a model of consistency in his five U.S. Open starts, finishing now worse than a tie for seventh (2021 at Torrey Pines). His tie for fifth in the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills propelled the former San Diego State standout to rookie-of-the-year honors on the PGA Tour. Schauffele now owns five PGA Tour victories, including the season-ending Tour Championship in 2017. He was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 2019 Masters, his best finish in a major. Enjoyed a distinguished amateur career that included winning the 2014 California State Amateur, and the 2010 California State High School title. Started college career at Long Beach State and was the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year before transferring to San Diego State to play his final three seasons. Still holds a number of SDSU records, including all-time scoring average (71.50) and lowest tournament score in relation to par (-17). One of his teammates at SDSU was 2014 U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang. Born to German/French naturalized immigrant father and a Chinese Taipei/Japanese naturalized immigrant mother. His great-grandfathers were both talented athletes. Johann Hoffmann (soccer) won multiple Bohemian, Austrian and French titles, while Richard Schauffele excelled in soccer and track and field, garnering more than 40 titles in discus, javelin and the shot put. Member of the victorious 2019 U.S. Presidents Cup and 2021 Ryder Cup teams.
